Elizabeth Prentiss was experiencing a time of great sorrow.  She had lost two children in a short time span and was herself almost an invalid and in constant pain.  One day she wrote, “Empty hands, a worn-out, exhausted body and unutterable longings to flee from a world that has so many sharp experiences.”  But Elizabeth did not dwell on her sorrows;  rather, she began to meditate on the life of Jacob.  God had proved special to him in a time of sorrow.  Elizabeth Prentiss began to pray for something special from God and then, as if in answer to that prayer, wrote the words of the hymn “More Love To Thee” as they came to her.
