Are Christians under the law? And if so, which law?

The apostles taught that though we are saved
without works (Rom. 3:20; 28; Eph. 2:7-10) we are also saved unto works (Eph 2:7,10).

While it is true that the Christian is not under the Mosaic law, we are not free from all law. Christians live according to a new law.

The following four laws are inseparable and form the basis for Christians to be fruitful for the glory of God.

#1. It is the law of the Spirit (
Romans 8:2), because the Holy Spirit leads and empowers us to obey God. Simply put... You can't obey God without God.

#2. It is the law of Christ (
Galatians 6:2), because Christ is our example. Simply put... Without Christ we can do nothing that is pleasing to God.

#3. It is the law of liberty (
James 1:25), not because we are free to do as we please... but because our condemnation was imputed to Christ and His righteousness was imputed to us. Simply put... The law of liberty is not a license to sin... it is now our nature to obey.

#4. It is the royal law (
James 2:8), because the sum of the law is to love my neighbor as myself.

Why then, is it NOT necessary to place ourselves under the Mosaic Law?

The answer is actually quite simple. Once a sinner receives Jesus Christ as their personal Savior; The righteousness of Christ is instantly and forever imputed to the sinner. Secondly, the righteousness of Christ is imparted to the new believer. What does this mean?

The Imputation of Christ's Righteousness ends the law of condemnation. (
Romans 8:1,4)

The Impartation of Christ's Righteousness empowers us to live godly in this present world (
Romans 7:5,6).

You see, it is not the Ten Commandments that save... it is the Tender Commander that saves. We are not led by the letter of the law, but by a better law (
Hebrews 8).

Sincerely, Dr. Arthur Belanger
