The term evangelist is used just three times in the Bible.  Yet, its meaning is exemplified on numerous occasions in both the Old and New Testament.  Philip is called an evangelist (Acts 21:8) and Timothy was encouraged to do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5).

The definition of an evangelist or evangelism is that of one who brings good news in proclaiming and explaining the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There are two aspects that an evangelist is instructed to fulfill.  One of proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ to the masses while providing discipleship for others to do likewise.  The most effective evangelist are those who multiply themselves through discipleship of other believers (Acts 6:7).  This was consistent in the book of Acts and in the teaching of the apostle Paul (2 Timothy 2:2).  It was the principle of discipleship that resulted in multiplication of  disciples to evangelize the world in the first century.  This all started when Jesus, (the master of discipleship) instructed His disciples to make disciples (Matthew 28:19,20).

The seasoned evangelist understands that the making of disciples is foundational to evangelism and is  born from the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit on the inward person (Romans 7:22; John 14:17).  The evangelist emphasizes the necessity of yielding to the ambition of the indwelling Holy Spirit to evangelize the world which is the only form of discipleship that is blessed of God.

Sincerely, Dr. Arthur Belanger
