When used in the New Testament, the term "baptism"  refers to union and identification with Christ at the very moment a believing sinner is born again (Galatians 3:27).  The Holy Spirit immediately indwells   a sinner at the instant of conversion or the new birth.  Thus, the baptism of the Holy Spirit unites the believer into the body of Christ and gives him or her Christ identity and oneness (1 Corinthians 12:13).

The baptism of the Holy Spirit should not to be confused with water baptism.  The baptism of the Holy Spirit deals with one's regeneration while water baptism deals with one's representation of salvation and always should follow a profession of faith in Christ.

Also, the baptism of the Holy Spirit should not be confused with the filling or fullness of the Spirit.  What is the difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit verses the filling of the Spirit?

Baptism Of The Spirit   Verses    Filling Of The Spirit

Seals The Saved                          Reveals The Savior

Converts The Sinner                     Controls The Saved

Instant At Salvation                      Constant For Sanctification

Gives New Life                             Gives Renewed Living

Righteousness Imputed                 Righteousness Imparted

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not a work that is additional to the work of salvation... it is the very evidence of one's salvation.  While the filling of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) is the evidence of one's sanctification.

As a Christian grows in their relationship with Christ, they find themselves increasingly compelled for the fullness of the Spirit.  The key to realizing the fullness of the Spirit is a sound study of God's Word and prayer.

Sincerely, Dr. Arthur Belanger
